Western Hills is happy to welcome Mike & Kathy Calaway to Western Hills. Mike has answered our call for a Director of music and worship.
Michael E. Callaway (Mike) was born in El Dorado, Kansas on July 20, 1954. He moved from Kansas with his parents and brother when he was a child to McAllen, Texas. His family became, and still are, active members of Calvary Baptist Church. He was saved and baptized at the age of nine at Calvary Baptist Church by Jimmy Heflin, former pastor of Calvary. Mike graduated from McAllen High School in 1972, and attended Pan American University where he was majoring in Music and Business. He married Kathy Bagwell on June 4, 1976 at Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen, and they have two sons, two daughters, two grandsons and three granddaughters. He was ordained as a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in 1984.
Mikes love of music, and his deep faith in God, has given him the opportunity to use his talents in several ways. While a member of Calvary Baptist Church he was a faithful member of all the choirs from the children’s choirs through the Sanctuary Choir. He is a member of a gospel quartet known as the Sons of Calvary. He also led the music for the church in the absence of their music ministers on several occasions. Mike served as interim music director at First Baptist Church of Edinburg for one year then he and Kathy moved to Roswell, New Mexico. After their move to Roswell in 2001, Mike became Music Minister at Highland Baptist Church, and both Mike and Kathy served Highland as their music team until 2011, when they felt God was leading them back to Texas. They have made their permanent home in Bandera.
The one and only church Mike and Kathy visited once they came to Kerrville was Western Hills Baptist Church, where they were very warmly welcomed. Kathy knew Don and Joyce Talbert from First Baptist Church, Pharr, Texas, where she grew up as a child and teenager, and it didn’t take long after that first visit to understand more of God’s plan for them to continue their music ministry, and that Western Hills Baptist Church was where they should be. Mike is currently employed at McByide Oil Co. in Kerrville, and lives in Bandera. He enjoys what God has called him to do, and that is to lead the choir and congregation in worshiping God through music at Western Hills Baptist Church.
